Well @notch of Minecraft fame is working on a sequel to his Ludum Dare game, Minicraft. Normally, I’d just say cool but it just so happens that I was thinking on turning a prototype I’ve been messing around with for a bit now into “action roguelike with crafting and modifiable terrain”. Well, I think I’m still going to see about getting something into a playable state and go from there. Keep your eyes hopefully I’ll update before St. Patrick’s Day.

After an extended break from thinking about torrentzip, it came to my attention that there was an issue with the Windows version. Due to file permissions it was impossible to access files on a drive mounted in Windows with the IFS Driver for Windows. As luck would have it my current development box has several ext3 drives mounted so I grabbed the source (and activated SVN while I was at it) and patched it up. It appears to be compiling and running just fine in Windows – I haven’t test compiled the source in linux… Hopefully there will be no issues.

Download it here: TorrentZip Win32 0.3 RC 2

*update* Missed a small but, huge bug – RC 2 should take care of that.

At work I am tasked with playing a DS for 8 hours a day so you’d think that the last thing I want to do is muck about with it after hours.  Well, you’d be wrong – Portrait Of Ruin is awesome!  However, I’m lagging a bit behind in it – since on New Years Day I received my R4 slot one cart and shortly after that I installed DevKitPro so I could jump on the homebrew bandwagon.  Having a good grasp of C and C++ it hasn’t been too hard to jump in and have simple things work.  Maybe once I’ve done one or two small programs I’ll put something together and bring it to one of the developers at work – maybe I’ll get to convert it for use with an actual Nintendo devkit.  I’m very interested in seeing the differences between the homebrew and developer set up.  That however will have to wait – Dracula is calling me…

Microsoft has announced that the XNA Game Studio Express public beta is now available from MSDN. So all new devs (and old school devs) got downloaded it and get started on the game you've always wanted to make. This version will only compile for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Once the final build is released developers will be able to purchase a subscription for $99 a year that will give them the ability to compile for the Xbox360.

I've got an idea for a game that I could make. It will feature a hapless blogger wading through press releases and PR sites trying to find something no one else has yet, all while dodging spam and pop ups. Maybe I'll call it blogwars. Heh.

*Update* I'm not sure why WordPress keeps butchering this post but hopefully its fixed now.

I was having some issues with WordPress and the image uploading function, every time I uploaded an image I'd get an error telling me that the thumbnail wasn't found. Taking a look at the code in wp-admin/admin-functions.php (starting at line 750 or so) made me realize that I had a similar error on this server when trying out PixelPost. And the fix was exactly the same.

I just checked and there is a fix up on Trac so it should be good to go with the next release. But, if you need to fix it now open up admin-functions.php and look for (around line 750 or so):

$thumbpath = str_replace(basename($file), $thumb, $file);

just after it insert:

touch("$thumbpath");

And you should be all set.

It’s all Mikey’s fault! Because of him – I can’t get this damn idea out of my head – unless – I chase it out – with a bullet.

The plan is to one day get together with some of his friends and play a pen and paper Cthulhu game. And someday it might happen. That reminded me of something that we had talked about long ago. The idea was to create a system so the game could take place over the i’net. Not much ever come of the idea…

I remembered that idea the other day and just haven’t been able to let it go. Maybe it’s because I’ve got a strong enough background now with PHP/MySQL that I could probably make it work. Cthulhu in a web based environment. Hmm. It might be fun…

Where to begin? OK. Databases. First database table would hold user data – e-mail addresses and stuff like that. The second database would hold character info – stats, levels, etc. The tables would be able to be referenced by a common user id number. Character generation would be a simple matter since once you’ve got your base stats it’s all simple math to figure everything else out. Mike (or Google for that matter) could give me all that info.

Look at that – a quick trip to Usenet get’s me ‘D20_WTC_88624_Call of Cthulhu – Official Character Sheet.pdf’ that should give me everything I need for the character table. I’ll have to ask Mike about the rest later.

The problem is where do I put people. NPC’s, players, horrors? I would need to build the code to make a ‘living/breathing’ town/city/country side. I need to start with a small location say ummm – a farmhouse. Then I can limit it to general places around the farmhouse. For instance: ‘the fields’, ‘the barn’, ‘the silo’, and the farm house itself. This could lead into at least one NPC – the farmer. Farmers have a pretty strict schedule don’t they? So, depending on time of day (based on real time * 10 or something like that) the farmer would be in different locations around the farm. That seems pretty broken down so it should be a nice start.

So, I guess I could whip up a couple of tables (user_accounts, characters, npc) and then move on to some basic location code from there.

Well, I’m going to make some ramen noodles…
